What Is a Periodontist?

A periodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease, as well as the placement of dental implants. Periodontists undergo extensive training beyond dental school to become experts in managing conditions that affect the soft tissues and bone supporting the teeth.

In addition to treating periodontal disease, periodontists like Dr. Lauer are skilled in performing cosmetic gum procedures, such as gum grafting and contouring, and addressing issues like gum recession. Their expertise ensures that patients receive the highest level of care for complex periodontal problems and dental implant procedures.

Why Choose a Periodontist vs. a Dentist?

While many general dentists are very good dental health professionals who offer treatments for a variety of issues, the fact is that a periodontal and dental implant specialist is often the best person to see for problems related to the gums and missing teeth. A periodontal specialist like Dr. Lauer has advanced education and experience treating health and cosmetic issues related to the gums.

Dr. Lauer has devoted his career to the treatment of gum recession and periodontal disease, cosmetic gum lifting and enhancement procedures, dental implant placement, oral pathology and gum problems related to the effects of cancer treatment, and other periodontal conditions. He specifically focuses on gum treatments and dental implants at his Jupiter practice. This commitment to particular fields of dental and periodontal health has led to a wealth of experience and skills acquired by Dr. Lauer, increasing the chances of successful treatment.

As a periodontal and implant specialist, Dr. Lauer sought further education beyond dental school. He completed a residency in periodontics and implantology, later becoming a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, and a member of the Academy of Osseointegration.

Since the successful treatment of gum disease can be necessary for your overall health, it is very important that your periodontal health professional is well-versed and experienced in a range of procedures that can help you meet your needs. Dr. Lauer’s extensive training and continued education with advanced periodontal and dental implant procedures can give you confidence that expert hands are caring for you.

When Should I See a Periodontist?

There are several signs that may indicate the need to see a periodontist, including:

  • Persistent gum inflammation or bleeding
  • Gum recession or exposed tooth roots
  • Loose teeth or shifting teeth
  • Pain or discomfort in the gums or teeth
  • The presence of deep pockets between the teeth and gums
  • Missing teeth that require replacement with dental implants

If you have been diagnosed with gum disease or are experiencing symptoms that suggest periodontal issues, consulting with a periodontist like Dr. Lauer can help address these concerns early and prevent more serious complications.

How to Choose the Best Periodontist?

When selecting a periodontist, it is important to consider their credentials, experience, and commitment to patient care. Certification by the American Board of Periodontology is a strong indicator of a specialist’s expertise and dedication to maintaining high standards. Dr. Lauer’s board certification, active memberships in prestigious dental organizations, and years of experience in the field make him a top choice for patients seeking periodontal treatment or dental implants. Additionally, Dr. Lauer’s use of state-of-the-art dental technology and his compassionate approach to patient care ensure that you receive both specialized and personalized treatment.
